I look at a simple, natural skincare routine as a part of one’s overall approach to a minimalist and compassionate lifestyle, rather than a reaction to mainstream options. – Becky Waddell, Be Clean Shop
Yes, absolutely. It’s a very exciting time to be exploring skincare and makeup because brands and makers are innovating with natural materials like never before. The texture, scent, efficacy and problem solving ability of today’s green beauty brands seem to improve every week!
2. Aside from having less products to tote around, what are some of the health benefits of minimalist beauty, both with products and a routine?
It might surprise you because so many discussions about skincare are fear oriented these days, but I don’t love talking about the dangers of commercial products. I look at a simple, natural skincare routine as a part of one’s overall approach to a minimalist and compassionate lifestyle, rather than a reaction to mainstream options. Does that make sense? To me, cleansing with a facial oil scented gently with a natural herbal infusion or a few drops of essential oil is the perfect way to start and end my day. Exfoliating with sugar, salt and coconut oil at the end of a long week, or replenishing your skin with a simple floral mist… these tasks are transformed from basic hygiene to true, indulgent quiet time where you can experience yourself and your surroundings intimately.
Moreover, and equally as important, I find that our collection of goods have been formulated in a way that is sensorily inviting, less irritating and overpowering, and in general, more gentle and subtle. Aside from creating mental space by not being bombarded by synthetic fragrance, we also find that this enables people to begin to notice the preferences of their skin and find products that respect their sensitivities.
3. When I first started to look for minimalist makeup, the only brand that worked for my brown skin tone was RMS Buriti Bronzer (which I still love). But with your help, I discovered Gressa, and I’ve found that few brands can match Gressa’s diverse skin tone range. Can you tell us more about this brand and why you love their Minimalist Corrective Serum Foundation?
Oh, Gressa. I really love this brand because the maker, Svetlana, takes her time with her formulations so that when a product is released, it’s high impact and innovative. Gressa foundation has an incredible serum to semi-matte finish that goes on so smoothly and melts into your skin instead of sitting on top. It’s moisturizing but not heavy and imparts a lovely glow. The rest of the collection, from Eye Tints (including new colors!), Lip Boosts, Lumiere cheek colors and highlighting/bronzing serums, do their job and do it beautifully. This is a beauty brand that truly enhances your natural beauty instead of masking it… I just can’t sing praises high enough!
4. When I came in to get my color matched, you mentioned being mindful of using applicators with natural products. Can you explain why that’s important?
With any makeup, not just natural ones, you should use the best applicator for the product type. We love the Gressa brushes, for example, because the fiber (synthetic vegan fibers) density is made to keep more makeup on your face than inside the brush, which is good for you because you’re not wasting your foundation. Some folks love beauty blenders, for example, but they absorb the foundation (Gressa in particular) so I suggest using fingers or the Gressa brushes. I find that brushes you might purchase for loose mineral makeup application (often more porous natural animal fibers) don’t work as well (or at all, in some cases) with oil or cream based products, and vice versa. Bottom line: if you’re working with brushes that aren’t helping you achieve the natural glowing look that you desire, try switching up your brushes!
5. As an expectant mother (Congratulations!) I’m sure you’ve become even more conscious about skin care products. What are some of your favorite products at the moment?
Thank you! Gosh, we are so excited for this baby girl to arrive! I think what has driven my product preference the most is scent because anything with a very obvious scent is overwhelming to me. I’ve been loving the Todos Organics infused organic coconut oil (this can be used for everything from facial cleansing to body/hair moisturizing… an excellent product for minimalists!) and the Basic Body Butter from Drifter Organics. I am also having a love affair with The Pits deodorant by Soul Sunday because it is soft and creamy and very gently scented with rose geranium and lavender.
6. Any other tips, tricks, or words of advice?
Finding new skincare can be really challenging. Don’t feel bad if you get overwhelmed by your online shopping options… it’s hard! We love to see folks by appointment so you get the one on one attention you need. You can schedule a visit here (it’s complimentary and there is absolutely no pressure or requirement to purchase anything). If you love shopping online, check out our Gressa collection – they just launched new Eye Tint colors (Envie – green, Neve – pale off-white, Charbon – smoky grey) and we are having a promotion. If you purchase any two colors you get a free cream shadow brush, and if you purchase any three Eye Tint colors you get both a cream shadow brush and an angled liner brush! There’s no code necessary 🙂
