For the past year, I’ve been decorating my minimalist home. Believe it or not, I found it more challenging to decorate 635 square feet than some of the larger spaces I’ve lived in. I followed the advice of minimalists before me and “got to know” the space for awhile before selecting key pieces. And I am glad that I did. I’ve slowly come to visualize my new home and now, I’m enjoying the decorating process.
Part of my journey to minimalism included learning to live with only the things that I need and love. I’ve recently learned what that means when it comes to decorating. I’ve been doing what I call the ‘small space shuffle’ – moving everything I love from room to room until it finds the perfect spot.
The orange pillow and throw from my bedroom are now in the living room. The bar cart converted to plant cart now functions as a bedside table. After a year of small space shuffling, every space in the house in now finished except my bedroom. This weekend, I went to our local Crate & Barrel Outlet in search of inspiration and I fell in love with these Korben Curtain Panels from CB2. I am working with Hadiyah Williams of Black Pepper Paperie to design an accent wall and I know these panels will finish my bedroom perfectly. (Check out Hadiyah’s work in Shantrelle P. Lewis’s home as part of HGTV’s House Hunters FB web series!)
So what have I learned? Don’t be intimated by your small space. Take your time making your house a home. You’ve chosen to keep only the things you need and love so enjoy them! And shuffle when needed.
(P.S. Many of you have messaged me about the living room space so here are the deets: KIVIK Chaises from IKEA, mud cloth throw pillows from Cedar & Cotton, leather shag rug from Overstock (I’ve had it for years but you can find a similar one here), and the grey knit blanket was made with love by my Mommy.)
